Cholecystectomy: A Path to Better Digestive Health
Welcome to our practice, where your health and well-being are our top priorities. If you’re exploring treatment options for gallbladder issues, a cholecystectomy may be the solution. This is a common and safe procedure to remove the gallbladder and provide relief from conditions like gallstones or gallbladder dysfunction.
What is a Cholecystectomy?
A cholecystectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the gallbladder, a small organ located beneath the liver. The gallbladder stores bile, a digestive fluid that helps break down fats. While the gallbladder plays a role in digestion, you can live a healthy life without it; however, some people might develop gallstones or sludge in their gallbladder which can lead to other complications.
Why is a Cholecystectomy Needed?
We recommend this procedure for patients experiencing conditions such as:
- Cholecystitis: Inflammation of the gallbladder, often caused by gallstones.
- Choledocholithiasis: Obstructions of the bile duct that may lead to jaundice (yellowing of the eyes) and even sepsis
- Biliary Pancreatitis: Inflammation of the pancreas due to gallstones that can sometimes become life threatening.
- Gallbladder Polyps or Tumors: Growths that may pose a risk to your health.
If left untreated, these issues can lead to severe complications.
How is a Cholecystectomy Performed?
There are two primary methods for performing this surgery:
Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: A minimally invasive procedure using small incisions and a camera (laparoscope). This approach is associated with:
- Smaller scars
- Shorter recovery time
- Reduced discomfort
Open Cholecystectomy: In some cases, a traditional open surgery may be necessary. This involves a larger incision and may be recommended for more complex conditions. This method is rarely needed.
We’ll discuss the specifics of the procedure during your consultation.
What to Expect During Recovery
Most patients recover quickly, particularly with laparoscopic surgery. You can typically return to light activities within a week and resume your normal routine in 2 weeks. We’ll provide clear guidance on:
- Dietary Adjustments: Most patients can safely resume the diet that they had before; however, the patients that have issues will usually have issues with dietary fat. This may cause bloating, pain, nausea or diarrhea.
- Activity Restrictions: Patients should refrain from lifting more than 10 lbs for 2 weeks. For those patients with small children let pain be your guide. If you are attempting something and feeling pain, particularly at the belly button, then try to modify your activity to reduce this pain.
- Follow-Up Care: We generally like to see you about 2 weeks after surgery.
